FASHION & CULTURE

When you think about Fashion as a cultural experience what comes to mind? I think for a long time I viewed fashion as something for the runway, something unattainable and primarily lead by the “trendsetters”. I remember seeing so many women dressed in an array of outfits, and looking exceptional as they strut. However, as a young fashionista I didn't feel as though I was apart of the glamorous world of fashion. Some of my biggest inspirations in fashion while growing up were teen magazines like Seventeen, teen movies from the 80s like Pretty in Pink, breakfast club and sixteen candles, along with some 90s classics like Sister Act, and Clueless. Movies and magazines were epic fashion forums for me. My focus was “what are they wearing?”. I think alot of my present style choices are inspired by 80s, and 90s fashion, and I see how focal colour pallets from those times influence my artistic expression.

So that all concludes my thought that culture is fashion. The way we express ourselves through our personal style is a product of our environment, economic state, social issues, relational focuses, and political influences. Humans are adaptable, so as life changes, and accessibility to materials change, so does design and personal expression. What's your favorite fashion era, and how are you expressing yourself today?
